How to Receive Money from WorldRemit in Uganda

There are several options for WorldRemit money transfer in Uganda, and your decision should be based on your needs, such as the amount to be transferred and whether it’s urgently needed. 

We’ll look at how to receive money from WorldRemit in Uganda for each transfer method. 

1. Bank Transfer

Your sender abroad can use WorldRemit to send money directly to your bank account. This method is especially ideal for transferring huge sums of money, as the limit is higher and it’s secure. 

Bank transfers may take one working day or longer to process before you receive it, so it may not be the best option if the money is needed urgently. Sometimes, processing takes longer when additional documentation is needed from the sender or you as the receiver. 

WorldRemit allows the transfer of up to UGX 7,000,000 per transfer using bank transfer. You should provide specific documents to your sender for verification before the transfer can be processed. 

You should provide your sender with the following information to receive money via bank transfer:

  • Your full name: Provide your sender with your full name as it appears on your bank account. Any mismatch between the name you provide and the one on your bank statement may cause delays. 
  • Address: WorldRemit also needs your city as the recipient. 
  • Account details: You’ll need to provide your bank details, including the bank’s name, the specific branch name, and the account number. 
  • Mobile Number: WorldRemit also needs a contact number in case of any important updates. 
  • Email: You may also provide your email address so WorldRemit can reach you with the transfer details. 

Once the money has been transferred, WorldRemit’s local agents will contact you when they credit it. 

2. Cash Pickup

WorldRemit has a vast network of physical agents in all the countries it operates in, including Uganda. As such, your sender can also send you money via cash pickup, and you can collect it from any of WorldRemit’s branches in Uganda.

You can collect the money from the branches of any of the following banks:

  • La-Cedri Bureau de Change
  • City Forex Bureau
  • Shumuk Forex Bureau
  • Diamond Trust Bank
  • Finca
  • Pride Microfinance
  • DFCU Bank
  • Guild Frank Forex Bureau
  • Finance Trust Bank

Money transferred via cash pickup will typically be available within a few minutes. In some cases, WorldRemit may require additional information from the sender before processing the transfer. 

The transfer limit for cash pickup transfers varies depending on the specific network. For instance, networks like Diamond Trust Bank, Shumuk Forex Bureau, and Guild Frank Forex Bureau have no fixed limits. 

For the cash pickup transfer method, you should provide the following information to the sender:

  • Your full name: This must be your full legal name, as it appears on your government-issued ID. 
  • Address: The sender must include your city. 
  • Mobile number: This will be used to send you an SMS notification with the transfer details you’ll need to collect the funds and when the money is available for collection. 
  • Email address: WorldRemit can send you details of the transfer via email, but this is optional. 

It’s essential to provide your sender with accurate details to avoid delays. Once the money has been sent, you’ll be notified via SMS or email, and you can pick up the funds at your nearest WorldRemit network. 

You’ll be required to provide the following at the pickup location:

  • Valid photo ID: For Ugandan citizens, you can use your national ID card, Ugandan passport, or driver’s license. For foreigners, you can use your foreign passport and valid visa or refugee card. 
  • Transfer reference number: When the money is ready to be collected, WorldRemit notifies you and the sender and gives you a transfer reference number. You’re required to quote that reference number when picking up the cash. 

3. Mobile Money

Another fast and secure transfer method WorldRemit offers is mobile money. Your sender can transfer money straight to your MTN or Airtel Money account. Your mobile money account must be registered and active for the transfer to be successful. 

MTN Mobile Money

To receive money via MTN mobile money, your account must be fully registered and active. The amount is credited to your account instantly, and you can access it immediately. However, the transfer limits are UGX 5,000,000 per transfer and UGX 20,000,000 per day. 

Airtel Money

Airtel Money is another viable option for WorldRemit’s mobile money transfer option. You’ll need a fully registered and active Airtel mobile money account to receive the cash. For Airtel users, it typically takes between two and four hours on working days to credit the money.

The transfer limit for Airtel Money is UGX 5,000,000 per transfer. 

For mobile money transfers, you should provide the sender with the following information:

  • Your full name: This name should match the name that appears on your registered mobile money account. 
  • Address: The sender must provide your city. 
  • Mobile money account number: It must be fully registered and active (9 digits, excluding the country code). 
  • Contact number: WorldRemit also needs a contact number for important update communication. This number doesn’t have to match the mobile money account number. 

As the receiver, WorldRemit doesn’t charge you any additional fees for mobile money transfers. However, you may be charged by local operators to withdraw the cash, depending on their policy. 

Receiving money from WorldRemit in Uganda is a straightforward process that depends on your preferred transfer option. For each transfer method, providing accurate information to the sender is crucial to avoid unnecessary delays. 

Ultimately, the choice of transfer method comes down to the amount to be transferred and the urgency of the transfer. Bank transfers are great for transferring huge sums, while mobile money is ideal for emergencies where the money is needed immediately.
