I recently opened an account with Ulster Bank and I've had nothing but hassle since. It was a decent sum of money but not a fortune. I was made to feel like a criminal when I lodged the money even though I had explained my reasons for opening an account.Secondly I Ihave received several phone calls and letters informing me of unusual behaviour on my account. I explained my circumstances at the time of opening the account and feel strongly that I should not have to justify myself again.

I deposited £700,000 into a Ulster Bank esavers account in between selling my old house and buying my next. I then had no access to the money for over 12 weeks and my new purchase fell through. They are utterly hopeless - sent me to Natwest in London who refused to help- ignored two letters I had to post to Stranmillis Road, Danesfort to withdraw - they found my letter over a month later.... the list continues. Its November and I am still trying to withdraw money. I deposited the cash in JULY!!

Opened a savings account because of attractive interest rates. No problem transferring my money to them online. Then tried to withdraw having waited 10 days for a card reader. Card came separately, then another card came. Neither worked. Decided to close account. Told to go into an Ulster Bank account in Ireland, I am in England. Couldn't find a number to call, eventually wrote to them cancelling account. No response. Phoned again to ask what was happening. Waited 15 minutes to talk to someone. Told they needed a signature to close the account. I Bank with them on line. Told I needed to go into a UK branch of Nat West or RBS with passport and signature. Not happy as 6 figure sum is involved. I used them for a business I had in Dublin. Just as bad. Avoid at all costs, especially yours.

Wish I'd read these reviews before I entrusted them with my savings. I had a nightmare getting card and PIN - they had to send three cards, the PINs for which never arrived, mail was delivered, with no postcode, over one month after the date of the letters etc etc etc. Whenever I rang I was placed on hold for ages to the point where I frequently gave up. I eventually had to put my complaint in writing and email it as the complaints dept would never answer the phone (surprise, surprise, no doubt busy dealing with countless other complaints). Eventually they paid me a reasonable amount of compensation for my grievance and my wasted time but how I wish I'd just avoided them in the first place.

Unable to access online savings. I set up this account some months ago and attempted yesterday to make a withdrawal. I was unable to do this and discovered that I needed a card reader and cardholder. This was news to me and not in any of their correspondence. I phoned Ulster Bank to be told this was in their terms and conditions. I can't be the only person who fails to read the 40 pages in most T & Cs. Be transparent Ulster Bank! I then attempted a phone withdrawal but as my mobile no has changed since setting up the account I was unable to do that either. 24 hours have now elapsed and still unable to do as my number has not "gone through the system". I was told I cannot go into a branch to make the transaction but can write to them with my request. An online bank which asks you to post a letter! Do not put your money with Ulster Bank if you ever want to see it again. I would give zero stars if possible.

4 months and still waiting for a means to take money out of my account, it's verging on being criminally withheld. Why on earth don't they automatically send you what you need to do this (a card and card reader) on opening an account, who opens an account to never access it again? And why don't they send you these when you request them, why have to keep phoning over a period of weeks, wasting time and money? They may have a highish savings rate but I rue the day I 1st spotted it, they've actually cost me money as I've recently had to borrow money at a very high rate pending closure, which I'll now initiate by letter. Fingers crossed they can cope with that. I plan to never, ever have any dealings with them (or RBS) again.

I don't usually 'do' reviews but my dealings with Ulster Bank has been a life changing experience. The interest rate of 1.25% might be attractive but the whole process of trying to set up the account was absolutely terrible. Thankfully it was so terrible I didn't put any money in, because I feel if I had put money in, I'd have never got it out! Stay well away!!

Opened eSavings account towards end of July because interest rate was better than most and account could in theory be administered online. Got no email confirmation that account was actually open. Eventually got letter confirming account was open and stating that activation code would be sent. After 2 further weeks weeks nothing had arrived. So battled for ages with them on online web chat to try and get some sense out of what was happening. All could get was that another code would be sent, refused point blank to text code to me. Code eventually arrived and worked, hallelujah! However you need card reader to draw any money out. So ordered one. Not prepared to put any more money into account after initial minimum deposit until I had a workable method of drawing out. After further delay card reader arrived, and several days later a pin number, but pin number would not work. After further lengthy futile web chat with them, outcome was that another card reader and pin number would be sent, Both eventually arrived and worked. It has only taken nearly 2 months to get to this point. So have totally no faith in Ulster Bank. Will only use card to empty out the account. Would advise to have no online dealings with this bank. Service has been terrible.

Following from my last review of Ulster Bank, the card reader eventually arrived (after a long delay) with the promised PIN covered by a removable strip. Removing the strip and holding the paper against a white background and then a bright light, as instructed, failed to reveal the promised PIN. Nobody was able to decipher the PIN. It can only get better but I'm not staying to see it.

Have deducted one star from my last review as the post code was missing from my first letter from them , which had the famous Any time Banking Card. It was dated 14 Sept but only arrived today due to the post code having been added on by hand on the outside of the plastic window. This systemic fault, if that is what it is, may well be the culprit behind so many complaints about missing bank cards for the reader. Later letters with the Pin and the reader , prior to that, came much quicker and DID have the post code typed on the bottom of the address. So I tested the paying myself system , using the card reader, card and pin and it worked OK, provided you activate the card and then add yourself first as a new payee. I will deduct another star if the monthly interest does not show up as a credit but was heartened to see Ulster Bank used Faster Payment for my self payment test and it showed up in my own bank in the time it took to log on there, so is quite possibly instantaneous. Seems they are victims of their own Top of the Instant Access [ ahem] charts for best interest rate and their systems are not coping. Many do misread their terms though, a recent example being someone who thought their maximum deposit level was £5,000 . Erm, you might find it is a little higher.. Errors abound on both sides.

I have been trying to open an Easy Access account with Ulster Bank but without success. I submitted an online application that was accepted and acknowledged. Then I received an email saying that I also needed to supply a document as evidence of my identity (why now and not at the time of submitting the application?), so I uploaded my driver's licence using their online procedure. The next day I got another email saying that it had "failed their security checks" - no explanation why. I spoke to their Account Opening Team who could not find my application on their system and advised that I should call again the next day. The following day I spoke again to the Account Opening Team and while on the phone I emailed them with the driver's licence as an attachment. The member of staff looked at it and agreed that there seemed to be no reason why it was rejected. She promised to contact their security team and phone me right back. There was no phone call for some time, so I phoned again and spoke to someone else who said she would leave a message for the first person to phone me. Meanwhile I resubmitted the licence, but got another email identical to the first. Again with no explanation. Still waiting for a phone call. The only positives were the politeness of the staff I dealt with, and the fact that got though to someone quickly, but the staff seem to be struggling with an administrative system that is shambolic and not fit for puropose - in this respect definitely by far the worst financial organisation I have ever dealt with.

I opened an eSavings account, which is supposed to be instant access, yet did not have any access to my money for over 9 weeks! I opened the account easily and ordered a card/pin & card reader shortly afterwards and was told I would receive them within 7 days. I waited weeks without receiving anything and had no access to my funds without them. I contacted Ulster via online chat countless times and kept being told I would receive my card within 7 days. I had to reorder my card/pin/card reader another 3 times and still wait weeks to receive them. I also sent a complaint to Ulster, yet received no reply other than a generic message saying that they would contact me in 10 days(which they failed to do). Having no access to my own money for 9 weeks, when I put it in an instant access account, is completely unacceptable. I don't know how a bank can have such terrible conduct.

Shockingly bad! Archaic systems that belong in the 19th century, which make opening and then managing an account an absolute nightmare. Well intentioned but inadequately trained staff always have to refer to someone else, leaving you on hold for decades. The online service is simply not fit for purpose. It repeatedly fails to recognise my security details and locks me out prompting yet another phone call and the inevitable 'i'll need to put you on hold for a wee second'. I have made a formal complaint but can never get back the hours I have had to spend calling this inept bank.

I was attracted by the headline rate for instant access savings. 1.25%. Application process was a nightmare. No email, nothing in the post. On querying, it was clear Ulster Bank do not want my custom. I opened an alternative account. Slightly less interest - 1.15%. But 10 minutes on the website, 10 minutes later I was ringing my normal bank to transfer money. I can see why RBS (who own Ulster Bank) are held in such low regard.

I have an ulster bank account , informed them I was going abroad as per terms and conditions. Used the card like normal. What they didn't tell me was that you can only.make 10 transactions a day and then your card blocks. This happened to me on 4 occasions leaving me stuck on Poland for days after I was meant to home. Promised redress from customer service, who don't deliver. Huge deceptive information from this bank. They are absolutely useless. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Even promising a letter which they failed to deliver there is so much more to say but words can't express my anger and astonishment at this bank, they're licence should be stripped.

Along with a huge percentage of people I agree this company is an absolute farce. When applying it isn't clear that you need a card reader and card so when it came to needing to withdraw funds I ordered these. Two weeks later I was still waiting for the card having received the reader and pin number. When I rang to ask for it I was told there was nothing I could do other than wait for another to be sent out. I literally had to beg to withdraw some of my funds out in order to pay an important bill. It is now another 8 working days later and still no card. I am amazed that in this day and age a bank is allowed to continue trading and having it recommended on the money matters website has left an extremely bad taste!! As soon as I can close my account I will be doing so.

Like many others I am unable to access my money, required to complete a house purchase. I, again like many others, was not aware a card and card reader were required. I find it astonishing that you have to apply for these, rather than being sent them automatically on account opening. I have been told it takes 15 days for the card reader to arrive by which time I will have lost my house. Other banks allow you to set up payees by phone - not Ulster Bank. I have been told to write a letter requesting access to my money. Ulster Bank seem completely unaware how an easy access on-line account should work ie on-line and easily. This is not the case.

If you follow all instructions carefully and don't mind using your passport number for ID check you can do a trouble free application, imho. The website was slick and quick and if you allow plugins/Flash you can navigate to the menu section on making transfers and payments [ to your self ] Having ordered a card reader, which my own bank also demands, I see no bother in waiting 15 days, given i plan to leave the money to accrue interest beyond the short time frames many complainers seem to run on. Where is the other bank willing to give you free access? Virgin allow 2 withdrawals inc one to close the account. Or you can risk peer to peer lending or some other scheme. Happy to give Ulster Bank a chance and go paperless to avoid chance of charges for paper statements.

I opened an E-SAVINGS account with this bank on 1st August and the whole process has been farcical. Ulster Bank will not allow you to make withdrawals from this account until you have a card and card reader although this was not made clear during the application process. I applied for the card and card reader and a few days later I received the card reader followed by a PIN number but no card arrived. Since then their customer service department have been unable to resolve this and today I was told by one of their staff members that the reason for the delay is that they have run out of cards. So my money is trapped in a supposedly easy access account that I cannot make withdrawals from. Their customer service departments answer to this is tough there's nothing we can do about it. My advice is AVOID THIS BANK.

I have accounts with 12 different banks and I have to say that my experience with Ulster has been the worst of my entire life whist trying to open 3x e-savings accounts (1 for myself, 1 for my wife and 1 joint). The IT director should be sacked immediately as their systems are dire. When you open a new account, the only two options available for online ID are passport or EU ID card. I thought this was odd as a Driving Licence has all of the information required on one card. When I eventually got through to somebody in customer services, they told e that you can in fact use a Driving Licence for online ID BUT there is no option for it when you initially sign up. You have to choose "send documents in the post" and then later on you can in fact just upload scans of your Driving Licence (why not just update the options during the initial account setup?). All of this is ignoring the fact that, when I opened accounts with other banks, not once have I been asked for my Passport or my Driving Licence. Some accounts were open and ready to use within 24 hours. It took a total of 3 1/2 weeks to get my Ulster accounts open. This was due to the fact that, despite uploading crystal clear scans of the front and back (no idea why they would need the back scanning as there is no personal information on the rear of your DL), the "DigiDocs" system kept bombarding me with texts and emails asking for the aforementioned scans. Along the way, "the system" bizarrely decided we had applied for 2 sole accounts each (despite only completing the application once) so began a tale of numerous calls to their customer services department (and more spam texts and emails from Ulster Bank reminding us to do things that we'd already done). Eventually we were up and running and both myself and my wife were able to use online banking so we duly deposited the £5000 maximum allowance in to all 3 accounts. Then, two days later my wife received more reminder texts to finish setting up her account (which was already setup). When we then tried to login to her account we were greeted with an error message. So, another call to their customer service department (this was call number 17 by this stage) and we were told that "the system" had wrongly tried to open another sole account in my wife's name. This meant a new activation code for online banking had been generated and thus locked her out of online banking. So Ulster Bank now had £5000 in her sole account that we could no longer access. Their response? We would have to wait a week for a new activation code and to go through the whole online banking setup process again. All in all, some of the customer service staff were nice enough and some were quite rude and a bit slow but they are clearly being let down by one of the worst IT systems of any modern company that I've dealt with.
