Launched in October 2020, Revolut Metal is the latest and most exclusive account offering from the fintech giant Revolut. Though it’s Revolut’s most expensive plan, in our opinion, Revolut Metal is the best metal card offering on the market, coming with an exclusive card you can choose from among five different metals and a slew of exciting offerings. That, however, doesn’t mean it’s without contenders — Revolut’s existing Revolut Premium shares many of Revolut Metal’s features and may be a better fit for you, depending on your needs.

In this short review, we unpack what makes Revolut Metal special compared to other Revolut plans and how it stacks up to other metal cards from competitors. Then, we offer our verdict on whether or not Revolut Metal might be worth it for you!

Revolut Metal makes sense if you're a frequent traveller, or if you otherwise don't mind the rather hefty £12.99 (or €13.99 or $16.99) monthly fee for the slick metal card. For most people, we think Revolut Premium is a better deal, as it offers most of the premium features found in Revolut Metal, but at around half the price!

FEATURE

DESCRIPTION

OUR VERDICT

Cashback¹

  • 0.1% in Europe
  • 1% outside Europe

Unless you spend a lot or are often out of Europe, the cashback isn't very interesting.

Insurance

Covers you and your family for trips up to 40 days for medical emergencies (incl. winter sports) and trip cancellation and interruption.

Good value, but more limited than other neobanks' travel insurance policies.

Purchase Protection

Covers up to £/€10,000 in damages and theft on purchases over the past year and up to £/€1,000 a year for even cancellations. 90-days return window for purchases and a 20% discount on device insurance.

Nice in theory, but your mileage will vary depending on your claims.

Currency Exchange

Unlimited, fee-free currency exchange in the supported currencies. Weekend markups still apply.

A great perk if you travel a lot or if you work outside your country of residence.

ATMs

Up to £800 in free withdrawals per month worldwide.

The amount is on the small end compared to other neobanks' offerings, but it might be enough depending on your cash use.

Savings

Up to 0.65% interest on savings "vaults" (UK and US only), with bonus interest based on your spending.

The savings vaults are pretty good value, but only available to UK customers.

Card Design

Premium 18g metal debit card, available in five different finishes.

The metal card is beautiful, and the choice of five finishes ensures you'll get one that suits you best.

Monthly Fee²

  • GBP 12.99
  • EUR 13.99
  • USD 16.99
  • RON 54.99
  • SGD 19.99

One of the cheapest neobank metal plans, especially if you pay for a year upfront.

Duration

One-year commitment, which you can pay to end early.

The minimum term is on the long end for such a plan. The fact that you get a discount for paying upfront sweetens the deal, though.

¹ All cashback is capped monthly at the cost of the subscription. Terms and conditions apply.
² Discounted when paid upfront on an annual basis.

Pricing and Minimum Duration

Let’s start with the most crucial part: the price. Revolut Metal, the most expensive Revolut plan, will cost you £12.99 or €13.99 or $16.99 per month (or an equivalent price depending on your local currency). The plan requires a yearly commitment, even if you can pay monthly. However, if you have the cash on hand, you might benefit from a discount of about 20% if you pay for the whole year at once, resulting in a monthly price of £10 or €11.25 or $12.50, etc.

Revolut Metal is also often the cheapest metal plan in its price bracket amongst comparable services.

Exclusive Card and Cashback

One of the most obvious draws to Revolut Metal is in its name: the exclusive metal card! Weighing a respectable 18 grams and fashioned out of a single sheet of steel, the Revolut Metal card is available in no less than five different finishes you can choose from: space grey, silver, gold, rose gold, and black metal. The silver and space grey cards are Mastercards, and the three others are Visa cards. All five card types look rather tasteful with their engraved logos and names, while most details are subtly relegated to the back of the card.

However, arguably even more attractive than the card itself is the fact that it comes with an exclusive cashback bonus that’s unique (at least for its European customers). The cashback bonus plans mean that you’ll get back 0.1% of your money in Europe and 1% on your purchases elsewhere. The catch, however, is that the maximum payout comes out to £12.99/€13.99 a month, the exact cost of your card plan! Be aware that terms and conditions apply.

You won’t make a fortune, but if you spend enough with your Revolut Metal card, it can at least pay for itself, especially if you travel or spend a lot.

Travel Features

Since we’re on the topic, Revolut Metal also offers features aimed at travellers. As of November 2022, having a Revolut Metal account will allow you to send three free international monthly payments, encompassing what Revolut previously referred to as "cross-border payments" and "SEPA payments."

This is a downgrade from the previously unlimited amount of money in 30 currencies you could exchange with your Revolut Metal account but it remains Revolut's best offering by far. You can also withdraw up to £800 (or €800) every rolling month for free anywhere in the world, up from £400 with Premium! If you're a US customer, you'll be able to take advantage of a vast network of over 55,000 fee-free ATMs nationwide, meaning you essentially won't have a limit like you would in Europe.

Revolut Metal, much like Revolut Premium, also includes travel insurance, covering medical emergencies (including winter sports accidents) and delayed luggage, as well as flight insurance for trips of up to 40 days. If a flight you’re travelling on is delayed by more than an hour, you and three companions (that's up from just one with Premium!) can also get complimentary airport lounge passes. Finally, suppose you choose to rent a car. In that case, the deductible of your car rental insurance policy is covered by Revolut for the first 31 days of your trip — which is a feature exclusively available on the Metal plan.

Everyday Protection

On top of travel insurance, Revolut Metal also includes insurance for purchases made with your card, much like a regular credit card could. You get purchase protection in case of accidental damages or theft for up to £10,000 (or €10,000) a year — up from £2,500 (or €2,500) with Revolut Premium.

As for the cheaper paying plans, you can also get reimbursed in case events you’d planned to attend are cancelled for up to £1,000 (or €1,000) per year, and you can get reimbursed for up to 90 days if you need to return a purchase beyond the seller’s return window. Finally, as with Revolut Premium, you can get a 20% discount on Revolut’s device insurance plans.

Savings

While fintechs like Revolut started by mainly focusing on current accounts, with no real saving opportunity beyond basic “pots” that don’t accrue any interest, Revolut Metal and Premium subscribers can open savings accounts:

  • Savings: Revolut’s most basic offering in this domain is their savings “vaults”, which are only available in the UK and the US. Revolut Metal UK users get a pretty good 0.65% APY on savings — in annual interest paid daily — which means that for every £1,000 they keep in such a vault for a year, they'll have accrued £6.50 in interest after twelve months. Metal users get a less impressive 0.28% APY in the US, which translates to $2.80 for $1,000 held for a year in a savings vault. However, they get monthly bonus interest on an amount of their savings equivalent to their spending with their Revolut card over the last month. The bonus is set at an annual 4.5% rate, which, divided over 12 months, translates to a roughly 0.367% monthly rate: if at least $1,000 are kept in a savings vault, $1,000 spent with the Revolut card over a month means a $3.67 bonus interest the following month.

Bonus Features

On top of all of this, Revolut Metal also includes a bunch of other valuable features, often shared with Revolut Premium:

  • As we have seen, you get up to £800 (or €800 or $800) in free cash withdrawals every rolling month, up from 400 with the Premium plan and 200 with the Standard plan.
  • On top of free domestic and SEPA transfers, you get an unlimited amount of what Revolut calls “cross-border transfers”, meaning a transfer to another country in that country’s currency, as long as Revolut supports it. For example, sending AUD to Australia from Germany would be free, while sending USD to India would require you to pay a SWIFT transfer, though your first one is free.
  • You get 24/7 priority customer support.
  • You can open up to five Revolut Junior accounts for children — up from two with Premium and one with the free plan. You also get access to several features like co-parents or savings goals.
  • Any card you order is delivered for free with express shipping.

Is Revolut Metal Worth It?

At first glance, Revolut Metal’s offerings are well worth the monthly subscription, especially compared to its more expensive competitors. But dig a little deeper, and you’ll realize that Revolut Metal’s true competitor is not another fintech but the cheaper Revolut Premium plan, which shares most of its features. Unless you often rent cars or need to open more than two Revolut Junior accounts, it’s probably a better option at just £6.99/€7.99/$9.99 a month, nearly 50% cheaper than metal.

One possible draw would be the cashback feature, but at only 0.1% in Europe, you’d need to spend at least £/€6,000 per month with your Revolut Card to make up the £/€6 difference in cost between the two plans. Not impossible, but if you’re spending that much money every month, you can probably get a better credit card from another provider.

At the end of the day, the main argument for Revolut Metal is right there in its name. If you want a metal card, it’s generally the cheapest option among fintechs, and it’s made even more affordable by the yearly payment option and the cashback feature. If you’re a looks-conscious person, you might not need any other reason than the fact that it looks fantastic!

MONITO'S VERDICT

Revolut Metal is a great premium option that we wholeheartedly recommend if you're a frequent spender, travel a lot, or are otherwise looking for a metal debit card. However, we recommend Revolut Premium for most users, which offers you most of the same premium features (including purchase protection and insurance) at around half the price per month!
