Many US banks and credit unions of all sizes will accept an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) to open personal checking accounts, savings accounts, and even loans.

If you are an immigrant to the United States and do not have a social security number (SSN), you can apply for an ITIN from the Internal Revenue Service for free. This important number will allow you to gain access to financial services so you can open a checking account or run your own business.

In this article, we list trusted banks that accept ITIN and show you options like Revolut and Wise to open a US account online without an ITIN too.

Can I Open a Bank Account With an ITIN Number?

Yes, banks and credit unions across the United States should accept your ITIN because it is a legitimate government-issued form of identification that proves your status as a taxpayer.

US citizens are generally required to show their social security number to open up a bank account. However, banks will allow you to open a checking account with an ITIN instead of a social security number.

What Do I Need to Open a Bank Account With an ITIN?

  1. ITIN Number;
  2. Valid Government-Issued Identification;
  3. Proof of Residential US Address.

When you present your ITIN to them, they may ask for two forms of proof of identification, such as your green card and your passport.

Online banks or "neobanks" in the US are financial technology platforms that give you access to American bank details from a digital app — often for free. Unlike traditional big banks, neobanks do not operate physical branches, meaning that you will sign up online to open an account.

The following three companies are government-regulated and approved financial services that offer you access to the American banking system. Neither an ITIN nor an SSN is required to open an account, making these some of the most accessible options available to US residents and foreigners alike.

Check out the following options offering online banking without having to provide your ITIN:

1 — Wise

Wise offers a Multi-Currency Account, which allows you to hold 50+ foreign currencies and access them with a debit card. You will get an American ACH routing number, account number, and SWIFT/BIC code for free.

This is one of the fastest and easiest ways to open a US bank account as a non-resident so that you can hold money in US dollars, spend money on holidays abroad, or receive earnings from an American employer.

Account name: Wise Multi-Currency Account

Monthly fee: $0

Send Money Cheaply to Your Checking Account That Accepts ITIN

Once you open an American bank account with your ITIN, you will have greater access to the US financial system — an important step in your life in the United States.

While you will be able to set up direct deposits with this account and receive salaries from your US employers, you may also need to receive funds from friends and family overseas. Or, you may want to remit US dollars cheaply to friends and family abroad.

Big US banks (such as Wells Fargo, Chase, and Bank of America) offer international money transfer services for a very high price. Not only do they charge high fixed fees up to $50 per transfer or more. They will apply a weak exchange rate to your transfer and pocket the difference — known as a hidden exchange rate margin.

This is why we recommend you send and receive money abroad using an online money transfer specialist. Use Monito's comparison engine to search for the cheapest and fastest international transfers in real-time:
