Account Number

An account number is a unique way to identify an individual bank account with a bank or financial institution. When a bank account number is combined with a bank identifier like a routing number, sort code, transit number or similar, it allows for the transfer of money into or out of one specific account.

Account numbers are typically used to process domestic transfers of funds between accounts via bank transfer, ACH, direct debit or other means.

Bank account numbers are located at the bottom of a check and may also be available from a bank’s online portal or via a bank statement or official correspondence. Individuals or businesses that want to receive funds from elsewhere will often have to provide a bank identifier and an account number, or an international equivalent like an IBAN.

Account numbers can also be used to identify specific recipients for international currency exchange. Some international banking identification numbers, like IBAN, will already have an account number integrated within them. For other codes, like SWIFT, you will need to provide an account number as well.

If you are sending money internationally and want to pay via wire or bank transfer from a bank, you will typically need to provide your bank identifier and account number.
