It's a shame I had to choose at least 1 start. I would rate it MINUS 10 stars if I could. I don't think I will ever use WU again. It's my first time and it's already really bad. My friend is in need of my help to send her the money (it's only like 60 euro) for a hospital treatment in Sri Lanka, as she was affected by the flood.(If it weren't urgent, she wouldn't ask for my help!) It's like a high emergency, but WU has not allowed me to send money over! I have used 2 different bank statements for verification but they still wouldn't pass the verification. One of them is even my investment account, so yeah all my information is there! I don't want to say this but, if (touch wood) something bad happened to my friend because she couldn't get the treatment, IT IS ON WU! I'm really frustrated and worried and disappointed!

I've uploaded the APP following your advertisement. Very easy and seemed convenient. Entered the receiver's name and city, when it came to the country it offered me only "choose the state". I was sure it asks my state. Entered CA. 30 minutes of my time spent, seemed very satisfying! Brought money to the store and completed the transaction. Was surprised by the price only $2 for the transaction. And what a time saving! Silly moment of happiness! Came home, checked the invoice, and it says Minsk, CA. There is no Minsk in California, I meant Belarus, but did not get this option. Realized that did something wrong. Called Western number 8779893268. After spending about 30 min on the phone was transferred several times from one agent to another and finally turned back to the store for "further assistance". Nobody could give me a hand on the clue what went wrong with my transfer and how to change the country. One more trip to the store, waiting in line, calling Western Union, and cancellation of the transaction. But I need to make the transfer. Still nobody knows how can I change the country on my APP. I choose Belarus first now, realizing that first time I did not even see the top. It just scrolled to the middle down to the name. Feel very happy, entering the receiver again, and then it shows me again California?! Feel frustrated, double checked first line. It's Belarus and it offers option phone starting from 375, which is right accordingly to the country choice. But bottom line is the same choose the US state. Can anyone explain why? NO. Bottom line: it's a trick - try it, waste your time and do it old fashioned way. OK then, apologized for the wasting of somebody's time. Paid $12.99 and completed the transaction. More than one hour at home plus two trips to the Western Union location with all the cancellation and lines, it’s 2 more hours. NEVER BELIEVE TO THE ADVERTISEMENT! It is really worst experience that I have ever had in my life, I needed money urgently today and unfortunately I thought that western union would be a solution. Money has been sent from Turkey, there is no issues upto sending, but when it comes to receive money, evil stuff comes on stage. Wherever I went as “WU” branch, I heard all similar stuff, system not working, dont have enough money, already reached WU payment limit bla bla.... So, i couldnt get my own money although they already got their huge commision for this transaction. If you wouldnt be able to pay, then do not accept transactions, as you cause serious results on client side in case of urgency,

I made a transaction with the Western Union. The transaction on the website showed transfer successful but the receiver never got the funds. I followed-up, the first response was it was paid. I kept getting the same response and I kept asking for a proof of deposit. Finally after scores of chasers Western Union ACCEPTED the money was not paid. They asked to me to take cash. I asked to refund to the same account from which it was paid. I am chasing on this for two months now. Every time I get a response that it cannot be paid due to a "Technical Issue". What? What exactly? A funds transfer business cannot transfer to bank account due to a technical issue for two months? Seriously? Then the worst part, instead of resolving a genuine complaint, the operator suggested that I should complaint to the regulator! Seriously? Is that your business philosophy?

Ridiculous fee increase. I was pretty happy with Western Union until they raised a fee from $5 to $81 for sending $1000 bank-to-bank to Poland. Curiously, a fee for sending cash is $26! It doesn't make sense, but help person and chat person confirmed it. Obviously, I will not use Western Union any longer.

Jake #894 was horrible!!!!!! I transferred money out of the country this morning and inadvertently added the person's husbands last name which isn't her legal name (Honduras). I called to ask if he could edit the husbands last name so she could pick the money up, he told me NO I would have to cancel and redo the transaction. I advised I made the mistake about 4 months ago and thought I had updated her name in my account and they had no issues editing the name. He said that is not the policy. I asked for a supervisor 10 times 25 min's later after asking for his name for 8 mins and given the silent treatment the phone begins to ring. And a supervisor answers the phone, this is not to say 15 min's prior to he said no supervisors were available and one would call me back. THe supervisor Loreal advised this is something he could have simply processed with no issue. HE IS RUDE AND SHOULD NOT BE IN CUSTOMER SERVICE.

I’m currently homeless and my friend was sending me money to get me home. He put payout location to be North Dakota and in the system it came up as Florida. They claimed they couldn’t help because I wasn’t the sender. First of all y’all need to change that crap. Especially being able to change the location. If I’m receiving the money I should be able to change the location when YOU WESTERN UNION GET IT WRONG. The receipt said it was sent to North Dakota yet in the system they have it listed as freaking Florida. So here I am. Sitting it the freezing cold weather. Waiting for them to get off their high horse and alter their mistake! Thanks for making mine and my friends day worse.

I have no idea why I have to award 1 star. They don't deserve it. Normal ID not acceptable to collect cash in an emergency. They said the photo ID was on their acceptable list but was not acceptable by any agents visited. I said can you ring the receivers phone and speak direct to her and someone at the branch. No. They can't. it is not their policy. The receiver has to ring from the Philippines to Australia to be transferred back to the Philippines and she has a phone that can only receive calls. Do they think they are being sent cash because they are rich ?. Next stupid suggestion was to go and get a police clearance. That only takes time and money which is a problem when you need the cash for an emergency. Better to deal with money transferrers who use Cebuana LHuillier in Cebu or whichever company is in in the area EXCEPT western union. They are a scum company. Never again will I be fooled by them. They disgust me.

I cant speak english or understand spoken english well enough. I tryed my best, but they cancelled my transfer and also my future transfers were blocked (for this person who is my dear friend) I had to contact customer service total 4 times before they gave me refund. Also i heard months later that my friend was having again problems with western union. This time they blocked her sons transfer. It sounds ridiculous that son cant sent money for her mom!!!! Cant recommend this company for anyone and rlly cant believe that this company is market leader in money transfer business. Just sick.

This company has cut off my account. While they imply that my transfers were not within government standards. They refuse to show me any evidence that they have to back that up. Basically, I send money to poor people I meet in my travels. I am absolutely law abiding and I do nothing illegal. By cutting me off, I can easily send money by RIA, Xoom, Xe, Transferwise and Moneygram, but unfortunately there are fewer payout sites and the people have to find a way to go get the money, which is a hardship on them. Thank you western union for hurting the most disadvantaged people in the world. If you want to accuse me of something illegal, be bold and actually tell me what you think I am doing wrong instead of hiding behind a secret curtain.

ZERO STARS Created an online account with Western Union to send money internationally. I was trying to purchase products from a company in the UK. My online session while placing my order would time out ending after only a few minutes. This required me to continue logging back in to my account several times and starting the order from scratch. Next my credit card payment would not process through. I called western union customer service. They would not offer an explanation. I tried placing the same order a second time with my debit card. Finally hours in to this entire process their site stated it went through successfully. I received a confirmation email. I notified the seller with the payment tracking information. An hour later I receive a phone call from Western Union to verify the transaction. I provided them with the requested information. My cell phone battery was about to die so I asked if I could call them back to finish the verification. The associate said yes no problem. I called them right back. I was then told over the phone their security department canceled my order. Moments later I received an email confirming my order was canceled with no explanation. In the email I was instructed to call western union. Already on the phone with them I asked them to please process my order, verify and do whatever else they needed to do to make this happen already. The associate was unable to process or verify the order. She asked me to try placing the order again. I asked if she would do it for me. She refused. I tried one last time to place the order. Their system declined the order from going through. Ultimately they were not competent in doing their job. Western Union is a complete waste of time. Western union completely ruined my day, wasted my cell phone minutes and caused me lots of stress. In addition Western Union made me look bad to the company I was trying to send money to. Western Union will do whatever it takes to make sure that your order will not go through. This makes me wonder how is this company still in business. Save your time and money. Avoid Western Union at all costs. You have been warned!

How Western Union works

How to send money with Western Union online

  1. Register an account or, if you already have one, log into your account.
  2. Choose the country you would like to send money to, as well as the transfer amount and the pay-out method (e.g. cash pick-up, bank transfer, etc.).
  3. Enter your recipient’s name and other information such as their bank account details (if you are sending to their bank account) and telephone number (if you are sending to their mobile wallet). If you’ve already sent money to them before, you can simply select an existing receiver.
  4. Pay with your debit or credit card. In some countries, you can also pay with your bank account by making a local bank transfer or by using an online payment system such as SOFORT, Trustly or iDEAL.
  5. You'll get a confirmation by email with your unique tracking number (MTCN). If you’re sending money for cash pick-up, your recipient will need to provide the MTCN to collect the money.

How to send money with Western Union's mobile app

  1. Open the WU mobile app and tap “Send money”.
  2. Select the country you would like to send money to, and enter the amount you wish to send.
  3. Choose how the money should be received, and how you wish to pay for your transfer.
  4. If you’re not logged in, you’ll be asked to do so.

  1. Find and go to an agent location near you.

  3. Give the completed form to the Agent, and pay for your transfer with cash or, in certain locations, a debit card.

Western Union fees depend on the amount sent, the send and receive countries, as well as the pay-in and pay-out methods. Paying for your transfer with a credit or debit card and receiving the money in cash is generally the most expensive combination. Also note that fees at an agent location are generally higher than when sending online.


Exchange rate

Like most money transfer providers, Western Union makes part of their profit by taking a margin between the exchange rate they offer their customers, and the exchange rate at which they can acquire the currency. In fact, Western Union makes 25% of its profit through this exchange rate margin on average. This is why it’s important to pay attention to the exchange rate when evaluating a money transfer service.

Western Union sometimes offers better exchange rates if you send larger amounts of money, so it’s worth considering if this is possible, in which case you might be better off bundling a few of your transfers into a single one if you can.

Western Union also caters to businesses under the Western Union Business Solutions brand name. This service, which the company launched in 2010 following its purchase of Canadian foreign exchange firm Custom House, allows businesses to use Western Union’s global business payment network and cross-border platform. Use cases include paying suppliers, employees and partners around the world, accepting payments from foreign customers, and sending mass payments globally.

In 2016, Western Union Business Solutions launched WU EDGE, an innovative online platform for SMEs to make and receive international payments, hold foreign currency, track their payables and receivables, and manage their cash flow and foreign exchange risk.

The Western Union Online FX platform of Western Union Business Solutions can also be used for personal transfers of over $5000, where Western Union’s traditional consumer service is unavailable. This allows consumers to make use of a professional platform for making high-value international payments.

Consumer to Business

Western Union’s consumer to business service is a fast and convenient way for consumers to pay bills from utility companies, auto finance companies, mortgage servicers, financial service providers, government agencies and other businesses. Bills can be paid using a debit or credit card, bank transfer, or with cash at a Western Union agent location. This service is currently only available in the United States under the Speedpay brand name, in Argentina under the Pago Fácil brand name, and in Peru and Panama under the regular Western Union brand name. A few other consumer-to-business and business-to-consumer services are available in both the United States and Canada, known as Western Union Payments (which includes the Quick Collect, Quick Pay, Quick Cash and Convenience Pay services).

Prepaid card

The Western Union NetSpend Prepaid MasterCard allows consumers in the United States to hold value on a prepaid card, and use their card to make and receive Western Union money transfers. The Western Union prepaid card can be used to shop online, buy groceries, pay bills, or collect cash at an ATM. You can get a direct deposit of your paycheck and receive government benefits directly on your Western Union NetSpend Prepaid MasterCard, which gives you a quicker and more convenient way to get and use your money.


The story behind Western Union

The Western Union Telegraph Company was born in 1851 after the fusion of the “New York and Mississippi Valley Printing Telegraph Company” and the “New York & Western Union Telegraph Company”.

While the company initially operated a telegraph service, Western Union started to offer a way to transfer money (the “wire transfer”) over its telegraph network throughout the United States in 1871. When the telephone started to replace the telegraph, money transfers became Western Union’s primary line of business.

After divesting from its telecommunication activities in the 80s, Western Union started sending money outside the US, and positioned itself as "The fastest way to send money worldwide". In 2000, Western Union launched WU.com to offer digital money transfer services, and later launched its mobile money transfer service in 2007. In 2009, Western Union acquired foreign exchange company Custom House for $370 million to start offering payment solutions to businesses under the name Western Union Business Solutions.

In 2015, the company launched WU Connect to allow social media users to send money through Western Union’s platform. The first integrations were made with WeChat and then Viber, and the company intends on continuing to grow the number of integrations with 3rd party platforms.


 


Which documents will Western Union require to verify my identity?

Once you register on the Western Union website, you can transfer up to a certain amount without having to submit any documents (e.g. £800 in the UK). For larger amounts, you will be required to submit the following documents to get your account verified. In order to comply with the anti-money laundering laws, Western Union may also ask for some additional documents to show the source of funds in case you transfer large amounts or make money transfers regularly.


Identification Documents

It can be a Passport or a Driver's Licence.

Proof of adress

In order to verify your address, Western Union will need to be able to see a document from a reliable institution showing your name and your address. This document can be a utility bill or a bank statement no older than 3 months.
