N26 Review: international wire transfer & card fees - all you need to know

N26 is a new, internet-only bank that you can access through a mobile phone app or via their online banking service. N26 is currently available across Europe and is expanding rapidly. N26 provides a variety of simple banking services for busy people. They offer international money transfers through a partnership with the popular currency exchange provider, TransferWise.

Currently, N26 offers transfers into any of 19 other currencies.

Note that some banking services are not available through N26, including cash deposits, credit cards, and cash payouts outside of using an ATM. Note that it is not possible to make a foreign currency transfer in the app from an N26 business account, or to make transfers to businesses.

For free, worldwide ATM cash withdrawal, you will need to pay a monthly fee for the N26 "Black" service. Free cash withdrawals from an ATM in your home country are set by N26 and do vary depending on where you’re located.

Please note that the fees and information we show in this review are applicable to N26 services to account holders in Ireland, Slovakia, Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal, Poland, Greece, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Luxembourg, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland. N26 services and fees may vary in other locations where N26 is available. N26 is expanding rapidly, so we recommend checking on their website for availability, services and fees in your location.

What are N26’s  international wire fees and exchange rates?

N26 does not list fees or exchange rates for N26 on their website, as they are only available from within the app when you decide to make a transfer. We do know that TransferWise charges among the best exchange rates and lowest fees of all money transfer specialists, but we cannot confirm if these are the same rates and fees offered through the N26 mobile app.

N26 do state that there are no hidden fees when making a transfer through the N26 app, and they say it is up to six times cheaper than a traditional bank.

If N26 does offer the same exchange rates as TransferWise, here’s how much it would cost to transfer money.

Sending 1,000 euros to US dollars

    • Mid-market, baseline exchange rate: 1 EUR to 1.1183 USD
    • Exchange rate offered by TransferWise: 1 EUR to 1.1183 USD
    • Fee charged by TransferWise: 4.23 euros
    • Beneficiary receives 1,113.57 USD

TransferWise offers the same exchange rate as the base exchange rate, meaning you won’t pay any hidden fees. The only additional fee TransferWise charges is their service fee, which is very competitive.

In most of our specialist currency provider comparisons, TransferWise is often the least expensive, fastest and most reliable money transfer businesses.

If you want to know more about hidden fees in the exchange rate, take a look at our guide: How banks and money transfer operators make money with hidden fees.

    What we dislike about N26

    • No visibility on the exchange rate applied to your transfer beforehand

    • You can only send money to a bank account

    N26 currency exchange service

N26 does not provide a currency exchange service that allows you to buy or sell cash in different currencies for travel. Note that there is no foreign transaction fee to use an N26 debit card for overseas purchases.

You can find currency exchange services by comparing international money transfer providers.

Using your N26 credit card abroad

Credit cards are not available from N26, they only provide a Mastercard debit card. This means you cannot apply for or obtain an N26 credit card—there are no fees for cash withdrawals using a credit card, as they are not available.

Here’s what N26 says about using a card abroad, “N26 doesn’t hide fees or add a foreign exchange rate. We also don’t tack on extra charges for rare currencies or for paying on the weekend. We give you the real exchange rate. Pay abroad and you’ll see the rate you’re getting in real-time.”

What are the fees for using N26 credit or debit cards at an ATM abroad?

With a Mastercard, N26 customers can withdraw euros for free at any ATM, up to certain limits.

Cash Withdrawals With the Debit Card at an ATM

    • N26 Mastercard / Black / Metal / Business black card: 5 free ATM withdrawals per calendar month.
    • N26 Maestro card: 2 € per withdrawal.

Cash Withdrawals With the Debit Card in Other Currencies Than Euros

    • N26 Mastercard: 1.7% of amount drawn
    • N26 Maestro card*: 2 € + 1.7% of amount drawn
    • N26 Black and Metal card: Free
    • N26 Business Black card: Free

Note that the N26 Black card costs €9.90 a month.

What you need to know when withdrawing money/paying abroad?

The ATM or Point of Sale device will often ask you if you want to use your card’s currency or the local currency.

What are the fees for paying in foreign currencies online or at a shop with N26 credit or debit cards?

N26 does not charge a foreign transaction fee for using your debit card overseas. The Mastercard exchange rate will apply to your transaction.

    • 💡 Tip
You always want to pay in the local currency! If you pay in your home currency, you’re getting a dynamic currency conversion (DCC) which is often a very bad rate (we’ve seen 5-18% currency exchange margins.)

      • Why you can trust Monito's reviews

Monito's mission is to help you (and thousands of others each day) find the best providers for your money transfers.

We do that by providing real-time comparison of exchange rates and fees (you can use the form below to make a comparison) and by writting in-depth reviews about money transfer providers.

We have partnerships with many money transfer providers (N26 included), which help us get access to their exchange rate and fees information (which we always check for accuracy). Those partnerships help us support our activity and offer our service for free.

We put a lot of efforts to review money transfer providers like N26 in details and based on objective and verifiable criteria. A good example of that is the in-depth User Experience Benchmark Study we conducted in August 2018.
